10 amp or 15 amp

This is the only decision you need to make, and it comes down to one thing: what is already on your wall.

10 amp, C1EC10A20D-AU

Standard power point

  • 3 x 1.5 mm² cable
  • 1,000 W coiled, 2,000 W fully unwound
  • Plugs into any normal 10 amp outlet
  • Suits polishers, lighting, vacuums, chargers
  • No electrician needed
More headroom

15 amp, C1EC15A20D-AU

15 amp power point required

  • 3 x 2.5 mm² cable
  • 1,600 W coiled, 3,200 W fully unwound
  • Needs a 15 amp outlet installed
  • Socket still accepts 10 amp plugs
  • Suits pressure washers, extractors, dryers, heaters

Before you buy the 15 amp. A 15 amp plug has a wider earth pin and will not fit a standard 10 amp power point. If your bay does not already have a 15 amp outlet, a licensed electrician has to install one. Check the wall first.

The reverse is fine. The 15 amp socket on the reel takes standard 10 amp plugs, so a 15 amp reel runs all your 10 amp gear as well.

Coiled and unwound, and why it matters

Every cable reel has two wattage ratings, and most people never notice the lower one.

Cable still wound on the drum cannot shed heat. Layers of cable sit against each other, the heat has nowhere to go, and the insulation gets hot. Cable pulled out and laid straight sheds that heat into the air. That is why the coiled rating is roughly half the unwound rating on both models.

Under 1,000 W, 10 A reel Pull out what you need and leave the rest on the drum.
Over 1,000 W, 10 A reel Unwind the cable fully before you switch the appliance on.Hard limit 2,000 W fully unwound.
Under 1,600 W, 15 A reel Pull out what you need and leave the rest on the drum.
Over 1,600 W, 15 A reel Unwind the cable fully before you switch the appliance on.Hard limit 3,200 W fully unwound.

The thermal overload protection is a backstop, not a licence to ignore the ratings. If it trips, something has been run outside what the reel is rated for.

How to work out which one you need

Do not guess from the brand or the size of the machine. The number is on the appliance.

1. Find the rating plate. Every appliance has one, usually a silver sticker or moulded panel near the cord entry. It lists volts, amps and watts.
2. Note the watts. If only amps are listed, multiply amps by 240 to get watts. A 7.5 A machine is roughly 1,800 W.
3. Check the plug. If the plug has a wide earth pin it is a 15 amp appliance and it needs the 15 amp reel. No adaptor around this.
4. Compare to the reel. The appliance must sit inside the unwound rating, and you unwind the cable fully if it is above the coiled rating.
5. Allow for start-up. Motors draw well above their rated power for the first moment. If a machine sits close to the limit, go up to the 15 amp reel rather than running at the edge.

We will not tell you a reel runs your machine without the numbers. Send us the rating plate off your pressure washer, extractor or dryer and we will tell you which model suits it.

Why a mounted reel in a detailing bay

What it fixes

  • Leads across the floor, the most common trip hazard in a bay
  • Cable dragged over paintwork during polishing and coating
  • Leads sitting in water near a wash bay
  • Cable run over by trolleys and jacks
  • Ten minutes a day spent coiling an extension lead
  • Damaged leads from being walked on and kinked

What to know first

  • Indoor use only, keep it out of direct spray
  • Needs a structural surface to mount to
  • The 15 amp model needs a 15 amp outlet
  • Guide the cable back by hand, do not let it snap in
  • Coiled wattage limit applies until the cable is out
  • Not a replacement for an RCD on the circuit

Mounting it overhead is the part people underestimate. A lead fed from the ceiling comes down to the work rather than across it, so there is nothing lying on the panel while you polish and nothing to drag over fresh coating. On a 20 metre cable, one reel mounted centrally reaches all sides of a vehicle and usually the next bay as well.

Where it gets used

Detailing studios and paint correction bays. Power to polishers, lighting and extractors without a lead on the floor.
PPF and ceramic coating installers. Overhead feed keeps cable off film and fresh coating.
Mechanical and automotive workshops. Power at the hoist, the bench and the floor from one point.
Home garages and sheds. One permanent reel instead of three extension leads in a corner.
Warehouses, factories and service areas. Fixed power where running a new circuit is not practical.
Marine, caravan and fleet workshops. Long reach around large vehicles and hulls.

Installing it

Position it centrally Mount so the 20 m reaches every side of the vehicle and the bench. Central beats a corner.
Go overhead if you can Ceiling mounting keeps the cable above the car and clear of trolleys, stands and polisher leads.
Fix to structure A stud, a beam or solid masonry. Not plasterboard, not cladding. The reel plus 20 m of cable has real weight and the spring loads the bracket every time it retracts.
Set the swivel The 180 degree bracket and 3 position lock let you aim the reel at the work area so the cable feeds straight rather than rubbing on the case.
Feed it back by hand Walk the cable back rather than letting it rewind freely. This is the single biggest factor in how long the cable and the spring last.
Check the circuit The reel has thermal overload protection, not an RCD. Your circuit should have RCD protection as required.

Common questions

Which model plugs into a normal power point?
The 10 amp model, C1EC10A20D-AU. It uses a standard AU 3 pin flat 10 amp plug and goes straight into any domestic or workshop outlet. The 15 amp model has a wider earth pin and physically will not fit a 10 amp socket.
Will my 10 amp tools work off the 15 amp reel?
Yes. A 15 amp socket accepts a standard 10 amp plug, because the 10 amp earth pin is narrower than the opening. So a 15 amp reel runs everything a 10 amp reel runs, plus the heavier gear. It is only the plug on the wall end that forces the decision.
Can I run a pressure washer off it?
Check the rating plate on the machine first. It has to sit inside the reel's unwound wattage limit, 2,000 W on the 10 amp or 3,200 W on the 15 amp, and the cable needs to be fully unwound if the machine draws more than the coiled rating. Most workshop pressure washers suit the 15 amp model. Send us the rating plate and we will confirm.
What does coiled wattage actually mean?
It is the maximum load you can run with cable still wound on the drum. Coiled cable traps heat, so the safe limit is lower. On the 10 amp reel that is 1,000 W coiled against 2,000 W unwound, and on the 15 amp reel 1,600 W against 3,200 W. For anything above the coiled figure, pull the cable all the way out before switching on.
Can it be mounted on the ceiling?
Yes. The reel is designed for wall or ceiling mounting and the 180 degree swivel bracket with 3 position locking lets you set the feed angle either way. Ceiling mounting is the better option in a detailing bay because it keeps the cable above the vehicle.
Can I use it outside or in a wash bay?
No. Macnaught rates the C1 electrical cable reel for indoor use only. Mount it in a dry part of the workshop and keep the reel body out of direct water spray. The case is UV stabilised, but that is about resisting degradation, not a weatherproof rating.
Does it have an RCD?
No. The reel has thermal overload protection, which cuts power if it overheats. That is a different thing to residual current protection. The circuit you plug it into should have RCD protection as required for your installation. Check with your electrician.
What is AS/NZS 3105?
It is the Australian and New Zealand standard covering approval and test specifications for electrical portable outlet devices, which includes cable reels. SAA approval to AS/NZS 3105 means the reel has been certified against that standard for sale in Australia.
What warranty does it carry?
Two years against defects in materials and workmanship. Macnaught is an Australian manufacturer with local support, which is the practical difference between this and an unbranded import reel.
How long will the spring last?
Longer if you walk the cable back rather than releasing it and letting it snap in. Free retraction is what kills springs, cracks cases and damages the plug on the end. It takes five seconds to guide it back and it is the single best thing you can do for the reel.
Is 20 metres enough for a detailing bay?
For a single or double bay, yes, comfortably. Mounted centrally and overhead, 20 metres reaches all four sides of a vehicle, the bench and usually the adjacent bay. If you are covering a long workshop, two reels mounted at either end beats one reel and a second extension lead.
