Optimum Gelcoat Restorer

25517

Size: 946ml
In-stock: Inventory updated

Optimum Gelcoat Restorer (GCR) brings heavily oxidised and faded gelcoat back to a factory fresh gloss without polishing, sanding or compounds. Engineered for boats, yachts, jet skis and RVs, GCR soaks into porous, sun damaged gelcoat and rebuilds it from the inside, restoring colour and adding UV protection that lasts 2 to 3 years. One 946ml bottle covers up to four coats on a 40ft boat.

Detailing Shed is the Australian Master Distributor for Optimum Polymer Technologies. Genuine product, authorised supply, full local support.

Key benefits

  • Restores oxidised and faded gelcoat without polishing or compounds
  • Rebuilds gelcoat thickness instead of removing material the way abrasive methods do
  • Adds UV protection to slow future oxidation
  • 2 to 3 year durability with regular waxing every 6 months
  • Can be applied in direct sunlight
  • Works on both clear and coloured gelcoat
  • One 946ml bottle covers up to 4 coats on a 40ft boat or RV
  • Acrylic based formula that absorbs and restores from the inside out

Directions

  1. Remove loose oxidation using pure Optimum Power Clean with a brush or mild scuff pad. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  2. Wearing gloves and eye protection, apply GCR to the surface in overlapping circular motions. If the gelcoat is heavily oxidised, GCR will soak in. Do not over apply. First coats should be very thin. Use a damp pearl weave, low nap microfiber towel for application.
  3. Once dry to the touch (20 to 30 minutes), apply a second coat. Apply directly onto the towel, not onto the panel. A sprayer can be attached to the GCR bottle, or product transferred for application. When the applicator begins to drag, add more product.
  4. Depending on the level of oxidation, up to 5 coats may be required. On the final pass, apply in straight lines.
  5. To maintain the restored surface, wash regularly with Optimum No Rinse (ONR) and apply Optimum Car Wax every 6 months.

Application tips

Four points for best results

  1. Assess the gelcoat condition first. GCR is made for heavily oxidised gelcoat. New gelcoat isn't porous like old, oxidised gelcoat, so it won't accept the product, whether clear or coloured.
  2. Prep is everything. Removing the oxidised layer is essential so the pores can accept the coating. Use concentrated Power Clean with a white scuff pad, exactly like prepping paint for a ceramic coating.
  3. Multiple thin layers beat one thick coat. Both will streak if over applied. After removing the oxidised layer, the gelcoat will look clean but dull. After 1 to 3 layers there may not be much gloss yet. The gloss comes through on layers 4 and 5.
  4. The applicator matters. What you apply with is as important as the amount. A damp pearl weave low nap microfiber towel or applicator gives the best, most even result.

Frequently asked questions

Will Optimum GCR work on coloured gelcoat?

Yes. GCR works on both clear and coloured gelcoat, provided the surface is sufficiently oxidised and porous to absorb the product. It restores the original colour by re saturating the pigment.

How is GCR different from a polish or rubbing compound?

Polishes and compounds remove gelcoat. They grind the oxidised top layer away to expose fresher material underneath, and each pass takes a tiny bit of your finite gelcoat thickness with it. GCR works the opposite way. It absorbs into the porous oxidised layer and rebuilds it from the inside, preserving the gelcoat thickness while restoring gloss and adding UV protection.

How long does Optimum Gelcoat Restorer last?

2 to 3 years on most surfaces, provided you maintain it by washing with Optimum No Rinse and applying Optimum Car Wax every 6 months.

Can I use GCR on a new boat or freshly gelcoated surface?

No. New gelcoat isn't porous enough to accept GCR, so the product won't absorb properly. GCR is specifically engineered for old, sun damaged, oxidised gelcoat. For newer surfaces, use a maintenance wax or marine sealant instead.

How many coats do I need?

Anywhere from 1 to 5 coats depending on the level of oxidation. Light oxidation may only need 2 to 3 coats. Heavily oxidised, chalky gelcoat typically needs 4 to 5 thin coats. Gloss really starts to develop on layers 4 and 5.

Can GCR be applied in direct sunlight?

Yes. Unlike most polishes and waxes that need shade and a cool surface, GCR can be applied in bright sunlight, which makes it practical for marina and outdoor application where shade isn't always available.

What if I get streaking?

Streaking usually means too much product was applied. To remove it, polish with Optimum Hyper Polish and an orange foam polishing pad. For stubborn streaks, step up to Optimum Intensive Polish.

Do you ship Optimum Gelcoat Restorer Australia wide?

Yes. As the Australian Master Distributor for Optimum, we ship GCR Australia wide with free shipping on orders over $150 (weight restrictions apply). Click and collect is also available from our Caringbah, NSW location.
