P&S Bead Maker is a spray on, wipe off paint sealant from the P&S Double Black range. Spray it on a panel, wipe it off with a microfibre towel, and you get gloss, slickness and hard water beading in about a minute per panel. It works on a wet car or a dry one, so most people use it as a drying aid straight after a wash. Available in 473ml, 3.8L and 18.9L.

Why people buy Bead Maker

Most paint protection makes you choose between speed and results. A wax or a ceramic coating gives you a good finish but takes an afternoon. A quick detailer is fast but barely lasts a week.

Bead Maker sits in between. It applies as fast as a quick detailer, because you spray it and wipe it off. But it is a real sealant, not a gloss spray. The polymer cross-links on the paint and forms a layer that survives washing.

That is why it is one of the most used products in professional detailing. It goes on at the end of every wash, takes about five minutes on a whole car, and keeps the paint beading between proper details.

Three ways to use it

As a drying aid

The most common way

  • Rinse the car, leave it wet
  • Mist a panel, dry it with a towel
  • Drying and protecting in one pass
  • Adds no time to the wash
Most protection

As a standalone sealant

On a dry, clean car

  • Wash, decontaminate, clay if needed
  • Spray and wipe panel by panel
  • Full job in about 15 minutes
  • Layer a second coat after it cures

As a topper

Over wax or a ceramic coating

  • Refreshes gloss and beading
  • Puts a sacrificial layer on top
  • Use when the coating stops sheeting
  • No stripping or prep needed

The one mistake everyone makes. Using too much. Bead Maker needs a light mist, two or three sprays per panel, not a soaking. Too much product and a wet towel is what causes streaks. If a panel streaks, mist it again lightly and buff with a dry towel.

What it does and what it does not

It will

  • Add gloss and depth, especially on dark paint
  • Make the paint slick to the touch
  • Produce tight water beading
  • Help the car shed water and stay cleaner
  • Add UV absorbers and stabilisers to the surface
  • Work on glass, trim and wheels as well as paint
  • Go over an existing wax or ceramic coating
  • Layer, so a second coat builds on the first

It will not

  • Remove swirls or scratches, that is a polish
  • Replace a multi year ceramic coating
  • Clean the paint, wash and decontaminate first
  • Fix water spots that have already etched
  • Stick properly to a dirty or waxy surface
  • Need diluting, it is ready to use

How to apply it

1. Wash the car Bead Maker bonds to clean paint. Decontaminate and clay first if the paint feels rough. On a maintenance wash, a normal shampoo wash is enough.
2. Work cool and shaded Out of direct sun, on a cool panel. Heat makes it flash off and streak.
3. Mist one panel Two or three sprays. Wet or dry paint both work.Do one panel at a time, not the whole car.
4. Wipe it off Clean microfibre towel. Spread, then buff with a dry side of the towel.
5. Flip and swap towels As soon as the towel feels damp, change to a fresh side or a fresh towel. This is what stops streaking.
6. Repeat around the car Paint, then glass, trim and wheels if you want them done too.
7. Leave it to cure About two hours, depending on conditions. Keep the car dry for eight hours for maximum performance.Do not park under sprinklers or wash it the same day.

Which size to buy

Size Price Cost per litre Who it suits
473ml $29.95 About $63.32 One or two cars. First time buyers. Comes ready to spray.
3.8L $84.95 About $22.36 Regular home use or a small detailing business. Decant into a 1L bottle.
18.9L $369.95 About $19.57 Detail shops, car yards and fleet work. Best price per litre.
Empty 1L spray bottle $11.95 Not applicable Buy one with the 3.8L or 18.9L so you have something to spray from.

Cost per litre is worked out from the current list price for each size. The 3.8L is roughly a third of the price per litre of the 473ml, so it pays for itself in under three bottles.

Buying the 3.8L or 18.9L? You need a spray bottle. The large sizes are refill containers, not sprayers. Add the empty 1L bottle with trigger, or the P&S 946ml spray bottle, to the same order.

Freight note. Extra freight charges may apply to the 18.9L for regional areas.

How the polymer actually works

P&S describe Bead Maker as a surface migrating molecule. In plain terms, the product is sprayed on as a liquid, the active molecules move to the surface as the carrier evaporates, and then they cross-link with each other and polymerise. Cross-linking means the molecules bond into a connected film rather than sitting as separate droplets.

The result is a thin hydrophobic layer on top of the paint. Hydrophobic means water does not spread out on it, so it pulls into beads and rolls off. That is where the gloss, the slickness and the beading all come from, and it is also why the product needs curing time. The cross-linking is not finished the moment you wipe it off.

How long does it last

P&S does not publish a durability figure for Bead Maker, so we are not going to invent one. What we can tell you is how it behaves.

Beading is the honest indicator. When water stops pulling into tight beads and starts sheeting flat across the panel, the layer has worn down and it is time to reapply. How fast that happens depends on how often the car is washed, what it is washed with, whether it lives outside, and the weather.

Because it takes a few minutes to apply, most people stop tracking it and simply reapply after every second or third wash. That keeps the paint permanently topped up and costs very little per application out of a 3.8L.

Common questions

Is Bead Maker a wax, a sealant or a ceramic coating?
It is a sealant. P&S describe it as a paint protectant built on polymer technology, where the molecules attach to the paint and then cross-link and polymerise into a hydrophobic layer. It is not a carnauba wax and it is not a multi year ceramic coating. It sits between a quick detailer and a coating.
Can I spray it on a wet car?
Yes. P&S state it works on both wet and dry vehicles. Spraying it onto a wet panel and drying with a microfibre towel is the fastest way to use it, and it is how most detailers apply it.
Can I use it over a ceramic coating?
Yes. It is widely used as a topper to bring gloss and beading back to a coating that has started to slow down. It adds a sacrificial layer on top rather than replacing the coating underneath.
How long does it last?
P&S does not publish a durability figure, so we will not quote one. Judge it by the beading. When water stops pulling into tight beads, reapply. Most users simply reapply every second or third wash because it takes so little time.
Why is it streaking?
Over-application or a wet towel, almost every time. Use two or three sprays per panel, work one panel at a time, and swap to a dry towel as soon as the one you are using feels damp. Direct sun and hot panels make it worse. To fix a streaked panel, mist it lightly and buff dry.
Can I put it on glass, wheels and trim?
Yes. P&S list it as safe on all exterior surfaces, including paint, glass, trim and wheels. On the windscreen, apply it thinly and buff well so you do not get smearing in the wipers.
Do I need to dilute it?
No. Bead Maker is ready to use at full strength in every size. The 3.8L and 18.9L are refill containers, not concentrates, so you decant straight into a spray bottle.
Can I layer it?
Yes. A second coat applied after the first has cured will add gloss. Let the first coat cure for at least two hours before the second, and keep both coats light.
Which size should I buy?
473ml if you are trying it or you have one car. 3.8L if you use it regularly, since it is about a third of the cost per litre. 18.9L for a detail shop, car yard or fleet. Remember the 3.8L and 18.9L need a spray bottle.
When will it not work properly?
On a dirty, greasy or heavily waxed surface, because it cannot bond. On a hot panel in direct sun, because it flashes off. And if it gets wet inside the first couple of hours, before the layer has finished cross-linking.
Do you ship Australia wide?
Yes, Detailing Shed ships nationally. See the full P&S Detail Products range, or compare the rest of our spray sealants.

Product information, technology description, surface suitability and cure times are taken from P&S Detail Products published information. Cost per litre figures are calculated from current list pricing and are a guide only. P&S publishes no durability period for this product and none is claimed here. Always read the label and the Safety Data Sheet before use, work out of direct sunlight on a cool surface, and test an inconspicuous area first on any finish you are unsure about.
