In-stock: Inventory updated

The NexPTG PRO Carbon is NexDiag's flagship paint coating thickness gauge, built for automotive professionals who need both accuracy and speed. It measures steel, galvanised steel and aluminium panels across an extended 0–3000 micron range through a spherical probe suited to flat and curved bodywork, and stores up to 8000 readings before you need to sync. Beyond the core measurement hardware, the PRO Carbon adds features no other NexPTG model has: a VIN scanner, voice-controlled operation, smartwatch pairing, and access to over 100 personalised vehicle bodies for client-ready reports.

Why We Use A Paint Thickness Gauge

I'm Nick, founder of Detailing Shed. Over the years I've used paint thickness gauges on a lot of vehicles, and it's changed how I approach every correction job.

I've picked up resprayed panels that looked completely normal to the eye. No colour mismatch, no overspray, nothing you'd catch just walking around the car. The gauge told a different story. I've also come across vehicles with real variation in paint thickness from panel to panel, the kind of pattern that usually points to repair work at some point, even when there's no paperwork or visible sign of it.

A few times I've had a reading come back a lot lower than expected on a panel. That's not a good moment. It means there isn't enough paint or clear coat left to safely do the level of correction the customer originally asked for. Without the gauge, I wouldn't have known that until it was too late, and cutting through clear coat isn't something you can undo.

Having that number in front of me before I pick up a machine means I'm making an informed call, not a guess. It takes the risk off the customer's paint, and off my reputation. That's really what a paint thickness gauge does: it removes the guesswork. You know exactly what you're working with before you touch the paint, not after.

You can't safely remove paint if you don't know how much of it you've actually got. Finding a repair, filler, a respray, or paint that's thinner than it should be before you start polishing can save real time, real money, and in some cases stop you doing damage to a car's paint that can't be undone.

If you're serious about paint correction, a paint thickness gauge should be considered essential equipment, not an optional accessory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a paint coating thickness gauge used for?

It measures the exact depth of paint, primer and clear coat on a vehicle's panels, in microns. Detailers use it to check for filler or respray work before quoting a correction, track how much clear coat is being removed during machine polishing, and establish a safe baseline before PPF or ceramic coating application.

What's the difference between PRO Carbon and PRO Carbon with Calibration Certificate?

Identical hardware and specifications. The certified version simply includes an official calibration certificate from an external, accredited certification company, confirming the unit meets NexDiag's stated accuracy parameters. It matters for anyone producing paint reports for insurers, appraisers or used-car buyers who need certified, defensible measurements.

What's the difference between PRO Carbon and the Professional model?

PRO Carbon extends the measurement range to 3000 microns (versus 2500) and memory to 8000 readings (versus 4000), and adds the VIN reader, voice control, smartwatch pairing and 100+ personalised report bodies that the Professional doesn't have. It also carries a 36-month warranty rather than 24.

Does it work on aluminium panels?

Yes. It automatically recognises and measures steel, galvanised steel and aluminium substrates.

Do I need a smartphone to use it?

The gauge has no onboard display; readings are sent via Bluetooth to the free NexPTG app on iOS or Android, where measurements, reports and vehicle data are recorded and exported. It also pairs with a compatible smartwatch for hands-free measuring.

Can it detect previous respray or bodywork?

Yes. Factory paint typically reads within a consistent, narrow range, so a noticeably thicker or inconsistent reading across a panel usually indicates filler, respray or replacement work.
