NexDiag NexPTG Professional Thickness Gauge

NEX-PRO-TC

Options: NexPTG Professional Thickness Gauge Inc (TOOLBOX)
In-stock: Inventory updated

The NexPTG Professional is a wireless paint coating thickness gauge built for detailers, appraisers and bodyshops who need genuinely accurate readings, not a rough guide. It measures steel, galvanised steel and aluminium panels to 2500 microns via a spherical probe suited to flat and curved bodywork, and pairs over Bluetooth with the free NexPTG app for iOS and Android, where every reading is logged, mapped and turned into a shareable report. This kit includes the dedicated hard tool case, calibration set and a full set of batteries, so it's ready to use straight out of the box.

Professional Tool Case

0–2500µm · 4000 readings · no certificate

PRO Carbon

0–3000µm · 8000 readings · VIN reader, voice control

PRO Carbon + Certificate

Same as PRO Carbon, plus accredited calibration certificate

Key Features

Curve-capable spherical probe

A movable, spherical probe tip in a profiled housing reads accurately on both flat panels and curved bodywork, without needing to reposition the gauge for contoured sections.

Automatic substrate recognition

Detects steel, galvanised steel and aluminium automatically, so readings stay accurate across the mixed panel materials found on most modern vehicles.

Full reporting via the NexPTG app

Every reading syncs over Bluetooth to the free NexPTG app, where it's logged, mapped against suggested measurement points, and exported as a shareable PDF report.

Up to 4000-reading memory

Enough onboard memory for multiple full vehicle inspections without needing to sync mid-job.

Why We Use A Paint Thickness Gauge

I'm Nick, founder of Detailing Shed. Over the years I've used paint thickness gauges on a lot of vehicles, and it's changed how I approach every correction job.

I've picked up resprayed panels that looked completely normal to the eye. No colour mismatch, no overspray, nothing you'd catch just walking around the car. The gauge told a different story. I've also come across vehicles with real variation in paint thickness from panel to panel, the kind of pattern that usually points to repair work at some point, even when there's no paperwork or visible sign of it.

A few times I've had a reading come back a lot lower than expected on a panel. That's not a good moment. It means there isn't enough paint or clear coat left to safely do the level of correction the customer originally asked for. Without the gauge, I wouldn't have known that until it was too late, and cutting through clear coat isn't something you can undo.

Having that number in front of me before I pick up a machine means I'm making an informed call, not a guess. It takes the risk off the customer's paint, and off my reputation. That's really what a paint thickness gauge does: it removes the guesswork. You know exactly what you're working with before you touch the paint, not after.

You can't safely remove paint if you don't know how much of it you've actually got. Finding a repair, filler, a respray, or paint that's thinner than it should be before you start polishing can save real time, real money, and in some cases stop you doing damage to a car's paint that can't be undone.

If you're serious about paint correction, a paint thickness gauge should be considered essential equipment, not an optional accessory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a paint coating thickness gauge used for?

It measures the exact depth of paint, primer and clear coat on a vehicle's panels, in microns. Detailers use it to check for filler or respray work before quoting a correction, track how much clear coat is being removed during machine polishing, and establish a safe baseline before PPF or ceramic coating application.

What's the difference between the Professional and PRO Carbon models?

The PRO Carbon has an extended 3000µm measurement range and 8000-reading memory (versus 2500µm and 4000 here), plus a VIN reader, voice control, smartwatch pairing and 100+ personalised report bodies. The Professional covers the core measurement and reporting job accurately, just without those extras and with a shorter 24-month warranty rather than 36.

Does it work on aluminium panels?

Yes. It automatically recognises and measures steel, galvanised steel and aluminium substrates.

Does it come with a carry case?

Yes, this kit includes the dedicated hard tool case along with the calibration set, user manual and batteries.

Do I need a smartphone to use it?

The gauge has no onboard display; readings are sent via Bluetooth to the free NexPTG app on iOS or Android, where measurements, reports and vehicle data are recorded and exported.

Can it detect previous respray or bodywork?

Yes. Factory paint typically reads within a consistent, narrow range, so a noticeably thicker or inconsistent reading across a panel usually indicates filler, respray or replacement work.
