FAD explained, and why it matters

Compressor air output is quoted two different ways, and the difference catches a lot of buyers out.

Pump displacement is the volume the pump sweeps on every rotation. It is a theoretical figure and it is always the larger of the two, which is why it often appears first in marketing.

Free Air Delivery (FAD) is the air that actually reaches your tool once losses through the valves, rings and heat are accounted for. This is the number that determines whether your equipment will run properly.

We list FAD as the headline figure on every Puma page. If you are comparing this against another compressor and that one only quotes displacement, you are not comparing like with like. Always ask for the FAD figure.

Installation and ordering

  • Runs from a standard 10A outlet. No dedicated circuit installation is normally required, though the circuit should not be shared with other heavy loads.
  • Position on a level surface with clear airflow around the pump and motor for cooling.
  • Allow access to the tank drain valve underneath. Drain accumulated condensate regularly; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
  • A 5 micron filter regulator is fitted as standard, so no basic filter purchase is needed. For paint, coating or PPF work, add a suitable coalescing filter downstream to reduce oil aerosol.
  • Check the oil level before first use.

Choosing the right Puma

Step up if interior cleaning guns are your main tool. The P16-100L lifts FAD to 240 L/min and nearly doubles the tank, still on 10 amp.
Step up further if you have a 15 amp outlet available. The P22-100L delivers 350 L/min, a significant jump. If you need to keep the 1,000 kPa pressure rating, the P18-100L is the 15 amp high-pressure option.
Stay here if your work is blow guns, tyre inflation and intermittent detailing on a 10 amp supply.

Maintenance

Glenco publish a full maintenance schedule for oil-lubricated compressors. Keeping to it is what determines how many years you get out of the pump.

Daily Check the oil level and inspect for oil leaks. Drain accumulated condensate from the tank; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
Weekly Check or clean the air filter, test the safety valve, inspect for air leaks.
Monthly Check the V-belt, tighten fasteners, clean the unit.
3 months or 500 hours Replace the oil.
12 months or 2,000 hours Replace the air filter.
2 years or 4,000 hours Replace the filter-regulator and V-belt.

Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered by warranty. Service intervals should be shortened in harsher working conditions.

Free air delivery is the figure to size your tools against. Higher pressure and higher flow are a trade-off at each amp rating, so pick based on what your tools actually require.

How much air does it deliver?

210 L/min free air delivery (7.4 cfm) at up to 1,000 kPa (145 psi). Pump displacement is 270 L/min, but FAD is the figure to compare against your tools.

What does FAD mean?

Free Air Delivery. It is the air that actually reaches your tool after losses inside the pump, as opposed to pump displacement which is the theoretical volume the pump sweeps. FAD is always the lower number and always the more useful one.

What tools can it run?

Blow guns, tyre inflators and general detailing blow-out tools comfortably. Interior cleaning guns are workable. For pneumatic sanders or polishers, check the tool's air requirement against 210 L/min first.

How many tools can operate simultaneously?

This depends entirely on which tools and how continuously they run, so we do not quote a fixed number. Send us your equipment list and we will work it out properly.

What warranty comes with it?

Glenco Air & Power provide a 12 month warranty against defects in material and workmanship from the date of original sale. Electric motors carry whatever warranty the motor manufacturer provides. Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered, nor is normal wear and tear. Keep your tax invoice as proof of purchase.

What maintenance does it need?
