One of the most common questions customers ask is which type of compressor they should choose. The right answer depends on how often you'll use it, the tools you'll be running, and how much noise you can live with.
There's no single "best" compressor, only the one that suits how you actually work. A weekend enthusiast detailing one car has completely different needs to a workshop running air tools eight hours a day. Here's how the three types compare.

For many customers, noise matters just as much as performance. A silent compressor uses a sound-dampening enclosure and a slower-turning motor to cut noise significantly, without giving up workshop-grade output.
Recommended for: professionals who need workshop-grade performance but can't, or don't want to, run a loud compressor around customers, staff or neighbours.
Once you need more than one person using air at the same time, or you are feeding a multi-drop ring main, single-phase compressors run out of capacity regardless of tank size. Three-phase units are built for that workload.
Recommended for: multi-bay workshops and commercial facilities where more than one person needs air at once.

One thing every setup needs: if you're running an oil-lubricated or silent compressor anywhere near paint, coatings or interior surfaces, fit a proper filter and water separator between the compressor and your tools. Oil carryover and moisture are the two most common causes of contamination on a finished panel, and both are easily prevented.
This is the constraint that catches most buyers out, and it is worth checking before you look at anything else. Every compressor needs either a single-phase or three-phase electrical supply, and they are not interchangeable.
What most homes and small workshops have. Within single-phase there are two levels: a standard 10 Amp power point (the normal household outlet) and a 15 Amp outlet (physically larger plug, common in commercial premises but often needs an electrician to install at home). Every compressor up to around 3 HP runs on single-phase.
Required for anything above roughly 3 HP. If your workshop does not already have three-phase connected, installing it is a significant electrical job. Check your switchboard before considering these units, a three-phase compressor simply cannot run on a single-phase supply.
Check this first: the most common reason a compressor cannot be commissioned on delivery is the customer not having the right power supply. Confirm whether you have 10 Amp, 15 Amp or three-phase available before you order.
Three-phase units also unlock a genuinely different capability: supporting multiple operators using air at the same time. If you have two or more people needing air simultaneously, or you are feeding a ring main with several drops, single-phase will struggle regardless of tank size.
Compressor airflow is quoted two different ways, and the difference matters when you are comparing models.
Piston displacement is the volume the pump moves per minute. It is always the higher number, and it is what many manufacturers lead with in marketing.
Free air delivery (FAD) is what actually reaches your tool after losses. This is the figure to size your tools against.
As a rough guide, free air delivery typically runs around 70 percent of displacement. So a compressor advertised at 25 CFM displacement may only deliver around 18 CFM at the tool. If you are comparing two compressors and one quotes displacement while the other quotes FAD, you are not comparing like with like.

The quickest way to narrow it down is to work backwards from your tools. A Tornador cleaning gun needs roughly 5 to 7 CFM of continuous air, so whatever you choose needs to comfortably exceed that, with enough tank capacity that the compressor isn't cycling constantly to keep up.
If you're running more than one outlet at once, the requirement multiplies, and you'll likely be looking at a 3-phase unit rather than a single-phase one.
