FAD explained, and why it matters

Compressor air output is quoted two different ways, and the difference catches a lot of buyers out.

Pump displacement is the volume the pump sweeps on every rotation. It is a theoretical figure and it is always the larger of the two, which is why it often appears first in marketing.

Free Air Delivery (FAD) is the air that actually reaches your tool once losses through the valves, rings and heat are accounted for. This is the number that determines whether your equipment will run properly.

We list FAD as the headline figure on every Puma page. If you are comparing this against another compressor and that one only quotes displacement, you are not comparing like with like. Always ask for the FAD figure.

Installation and ordering

  • Requires a 15 amp outlet. This uses a physically larger plug than a standard 10 amp point.
  • If you do not have 15 amp available, a licensed electrician will need to install the circuit.
  • Position on a level surface with clear airflow around the pump and motor.
  • Allow access underneath for the tank drain valve. Drain accumulated condensate regularly; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
  • A 5 micron filter regulator is fitted as standard, so no basic filter purchase is needed. For paint, coating or PPF work, add a suitable coalescing filter downstream to reduce oil aerosol.

Choosing the right Puma

Step up in tank if you run air tools for long stretches. The P22-120L is the identical pump on a 120 litre receiver.
Choose the P18-100L instead if you need 1,000 kPa (145 psi). The P18-100L reaches the higher pressure at 320 L/min, against this model's 350 L/min at 800 kPa.
Step down if you are limited to a 10 amp outlet. The P16-100L runs on a standard point.
Step up to three-phase if several people need air at once. The P30 415V delivers 520 L/min.

Maintenance

Glenco publish a full maintenance schedule for oil-lubricated compressors. Keeping to it is what determines how many years you get out of the pump.

350 L/min free air delivery (12.4 cfm) at up to 800 kPa (115 psi). That is the highest FAD available from a single-phase Puma. If you need 1,000 kPa (145 psi), the P18-100L is the high-pressure alternative at 320 L/min.

What does FAD mean?

Free Air Delivery, the usable air reaching your tool. Pump displacement is the theoretical swept volume and is always a larger number. FAD is what you should compare.

What tools can it run?

Blow guns, detailing tools, interior cleaning guns and pneumatic polishers comfortably. Sanders are workable for a single operator. For high-consumption tools, check the specific requirement first.

How many tools can operate simultaneously?

What power supply is required?

Glenco Air & Power provide a 12 month warranty against defects in material and workmanship from the date of original sale. Electric motors carry whatever warranty the motor manufacturer provides. Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered, nor is normal wear and tear. Keep your tax invoice as proof of purchase.
