Nick from Detailing Shed here. If you've ever finished a bonnet and wondered why the polish didn't cut like it did last time, the compound probably wasn't the problem. The pad was.

Pad choice matters more than most people give it credit for. The pad decides how much of the compound's cutting ability actually reaches the paint, how the finish comes up once the cutting is done, and how long the job takes you. Run a soft finishing pad with a heavy cutting compound and you'll be there all afternoon wondering why the swirl won't shift. Run a coarse cutting pad with a delicate one-step polish and you'll cut lines into paint that didn't need it. The pad and the product are a team, not two separate decisions.

This guide is for anyone working a dual action polisher, from someone doing their own car on a Saturday through to detailers running multiple cars a week. Buff and Shine have been making pads in the States since 1986, and they build them for people who polish for a living rather than for a shelf in a shop. The downside is the range is big and it isn't obvious what does what. I get asked about it constantly, so this is me writing it down properly — foam pads, microfibre pads and wool pads, what each colour and interface actually means, which pad to run under the compound you already own, and the one thing that catches nearly everyone out with the microfibre range. By the end you'll be able to look at any pad in the lineup and know exactly what it's for.

The Three Families

Uro-Tec Foam

The everyday pads. Colour coded by aggression from heavy cutting through to wax and sealant application. This is where most people live, and for good reason — foam is forgiving, predictable and easy to control on a dual action.

Uro-Fiber Microfibre

More bite than foam for the same effort. Excellent on hard clear coats and for cutting down defects faster on a dual action. Trades a little of foam's forgiveness for genuine speed.

Uro-Wool

Serious correction. Wool cuts harder and runs cooler than foam, which is why it's still the answer on genuinely damaged paint, on rotary and dual action alike.

Foam is the pad most people should reach for first. It's more forgiving of technique than microfibre or wool, it's easier to keep flat on curved panels, and the range of grades from Coarse Blue through to White means you can go as gentle or as aggressive as the paint needs. The trade-off is speed — foam has to work a little harder to remove the same defect that microfibre or wool would clear in fewer passes. That's a fair trade for most people, because control matters more than raw speed when you're learning.

Microfibre earns its keep on hard clear coats — a lot of newer European and Japanese vehicles run paint that's noticeably harder than what foam alone wants to cut through efficiently. The short, dense fibres on a Uro-Fiber pad bite into the clear coat rather than gliding over it, which is why they cut faster than a foam pad of the same grade. That makes them a genuine option for one-step correction on paint that would otherwise need two full stages with foam, saving you a compounding pass on jobs where time is tight. The trade-off is that microfibre finishes down less predictably than foam, so most people cut with it and refine with a foam pad afterwards.

Uro-Fiber Microfibre

Right, this is the bit that trips everyone up. On the Uro-Fiber pads the fibres do not tell you the grade. The foam interface underneath does. Three of the four grades use the same all white fibres, so if you're going off what the face looks like you will grab the wrong pad every single time.

The part numbers make sense once someone points it out. First digit is the size, 3 for 3 inch, 5 for 5.25, 6 for 6.25. The middle digits are the grade. So a 542MFP is a 5.25 inch blueberry cutting pad and a 322MFP is a 3 inch dark yellow polishing pad in a two pack. Once you see it you can read the whole range off the box.

Two whites, opposite ends of the rangeThere are two pads with a white interface and they could not be further apart. Black and white fibres cuts. All white fibres is your final finishing pad. Check the fibres before you put compound on a white one, because grabbing the wrong one halfway through a bonnet is a bad afternoon.

One-step correction is where microfibre really shows its hand. Because the fibres are already doing more of the cutting work than foam would, a one-step compound on a Uro-Fiber Blueberry or dark yellow pad can pull a genuine correction-and-finish result out of a single pass on paint that isn't too far gone. It won't replace a proper two-stage correction on heavily swirled paint, but on a daily driver with light to moderate defects it's often the fastest legitimate path from dull to done.

Uro-Wool

Wool is the one everybody forgets. It cuts harder than foam, runs cooler while it does it, and clears defects that foam has to grind away at. On a rotary or a long throw dual action it's still the quickest way through paint that is genuinely in trouble.

Heat is the reason wool still earns a place in a professional's kit. Foam and microfibre both build up friction heat as they cut, and on thin or heat-sensitive clear coats that heat can do damage of its own on top of whatever you're trying to fix. Wool fibres don't pack down against the paint the way foam does, so air keeps moving through the pad and heat dissipates rather than building up under the backing plate. That's part of why professionals who cut paint daily still keep wool in rotation — it lets them push harder correction without the heat risk that comes with leaning on a foam pad for the same result.

On a rotary, wool has always been the go-to for the heaviest correction work, because the higher, more direct energy of a rotary suits wool's aggressive, open structure. On a dual action, the newer knitted and blended wool pads behave far better than the old twisted wool most people picture — they finish down more evenly and are considerably more forgiving if you're not used to running wool day to day. If you're new to wool, start on a dual action with a blended pad before you reach for anything on a rotary.

From Nick's Detailing BayWool cops a bad reputation it doesn't really deserve any more. That reputation comes from old-school pads run on a rotary by someone who hadn't quite got the hang of it yet. Run a modern wool blend on a dual action and it finishes down far better than most people expect, and on paint that's genuinely had a hard life, you'll get there in half the passes. Follow up with a foam refine and you'll wonder why you left it on the shelf for so long.

Marine and Large Format

Boats, caravans and gelcoat need more pad than a car does, and the oxidation is usually a lot worse than anything you meet on paint.

Common Buff and Shine Pad Mistakes

Most pad problems aren't really pad problems, they're technique problems wearing a pad's name. These are the ones I see most often.

Reaching for the most aggressive pad first. It's tempting to grab Coarse Blue or Heavy Pile wool because you want the job done quickly, but starting too aggressive means more time spent refining out the marks the pad itself left behind. Start with the least aggressive pad that will realistically do the job and step up only if you need to.

Not cleaning the pad often enough. A pad loaded with spent compound stops cutting and starts smearing residue around instead. Brush or blow it out every couple of panels, not once at the end of the job.

Trying to complete a whole vehicle with one pad. Pads load up as you go, and a tired pad on the back half of a car is doing a noticeably worse job than the fresh one you started with. Have two or three of each grade on hand and rotate them.

Confusing the Uro-Fiber interface colours. This is the single most common mix-up I see. Two of the four Uro-Fiber grades share a white interface, and the only way to tell them apart is the fibre colour, not the foam. Check the fibres before you load compound, every time.

Using a worn-out pad and blaming the compound. Torn foam, matted fibres or a backing that's starting to let go all reduce a pad's ability to cut and finish properly. If the results have gone off and nothing else has changed, check the pad before you second-guess the product.

We get asked this a lot, usually from people switching systems or building out a kit from scratch. Both are proper professional pad ranges used by detailers worldwide, and neither is the wrong choice. Here's how they actually compare.

In practice, most detailers who've used both will tell you the two ranges perform similarly well when matched correctly to the job. The bigger factor is usually what your current backing plates and machines suit, what your local supplier stocks, and which system you already know the sizing and colour language for. If you're starting from scratch, the wider Uro-Wool and marine range is a point in Buff and Shine's favour if boats, caravans or heavy correction work are part of what you do.

Pad and Compound Pairings

This is the bit worth bookmarking. Find the compound you already own and it tells you what to put under it. Saves a lot of guessing.

Worth understanding before you jump to the tables: the pad changes what a compound does. The same bottle of polish will cut noticeably harder on a Uro-Tec Dark Blue than it will on a Yellow, and harder again on a microfibre pad than either. If a one-step compound isn't quite cutting enough, moving up one pad grade is often a faster fix than switching products entirely. Likewise, if a finishing compound is leaving haze, dropping down a pad grade before you reach for a different polish is worth trying first. Treat the pad as your fine control and the compound as the broad stroke.

Sizing

Match the pad to your backing plate first. Then think about the panel.

3 inch

Pillars, mirrors, bumper corners, door handles and anywhere a bigger plate can't sit flat. Modern cars have more curve than people expect, so you'll use these more than you think.

5 to 5.25 inch

The everyday size. Doors, quarters, guards. If you own one size, own this one.

6 to 6.25 inch

Bonnets, roofs and boots. Covers ground faster on big flat panels, awkward everywhere else.

7 to 8 inch

Marine, caravans and commercial. Large flat surfaces where coverage is everything.

Smaller pads generally correct faster than people expect, because the same machine power is concentrated over a smaller surface area. A 3 inch pad on a tight spot will often cut a defect out quicker than a 6 inch pad struggling to make even contact on the same area. Bigger isn't automatically better — a large pad on a small or curved panel just means less of the pad is actually contacting paint, which costs you cutting power rather than adding it.

If you're new to polishing, start with a 5 to 5.25 inch pad on a 15mm or 21mm throw dual action. It's the size and stroke combination most instructional content is built around, it suits the majority of panels on a standard car, and it's forgiving enough that a slightly uneven pass won't leave an obvious mark. Add 3 inch pads for tight spots once you're comfortable, and only reach for 6 inch pads once you're confident keeping a larger pad flat on a bonnet or roof.

Pad Care

Pads are consumables. How you look after them decides whether that means months or one car.

During the job

Clean the pad more often than you feel like doing. Every couple of sections, brush or blow the spent compound out. A loaded pad stops cutting and starts smearing, and I've lost count of how many people have blamed a compound when the pad was the problem.

Washing

Wash them after every job with a dedicated pad cleaner, not household detergent. Work the cleaner through the foam or fibres by hand or with a pad washing tool, rinse until the water runs clear, and don't wring the foam — squeeze it gently instead.

Drying

Let pads air dry face up, out of direct sun, with good airflow around them. Never in the dryer — heat breaks down foam and fibres far faster than normal use does.

Storage

Store clean, fully dry pads flat or hanging, away from dust and out of direct sunlight. A pad bag or a dedicated drawer keeps them free of grit that would otherwise scratch the next panel you use them on.

When to retire a pad

Retire them honestly. Once the foam tears, the fibres mat down or the backing starts letting go, it's done. A worn pad is slower and can mark paint.

How long a pad typically lasts

With proper cleaning and washing after every use, a foam pad will usually see somewhere between 15 and 30 full panels of work before it's noticeably past its best, and microfibre and wool pads tend to sit toward the lower end of that range because the fibres compact with heavy use. Skip the washing step regularly and you'll see that lifespan drop sharply, along with the quality of the finish well before the pad physically wears out.

Own more than you think you need. Two or three of each grade minimum for a whole car. Swapping to a fresh pad halfway through is the difference between a finish you're happy with and one you talk yourself into.

Questions I Get Asked

What do the Buff and Shine pad colours mean?

On the Uro-Tec foam pads the colour is the grade, running blue for heavy cut, maroon for medium cut, yellow for polishing, black for finishing and white for wax and sealant. On the Uro-Fiber microfibre pads it's different, the interface foam colour tells you the grade rather than the fibres. See both tables above.

Why do two microfibre pads have white interfaces?

Because they're told apart by the fibres. The white interface with black and white fibres is a cutting pad. The white interface with all white fibres is your final finishing pad. It's the one thing on the whole range worth double checking before you start.

What is the most popular Buff and Shine pad?

Uro-Tec Maroon and Uro-Tec Yellow are the two we sell the most of by a clear margin. Maroon handles the medium cut most cars need, and Yellow is the go-to refining pad after it. Between the two they cover a huge share of the correction work most people do.

Which pad is best for one-step correction?

Uro-Tec Maroon or Uro-Tec Dark Blue on foam, or Uro-Fiber Blueberry if the paint is hard and you want more bite from the same pass. Match the pad to how far gone the paint is — Dark Blue and Blueberry for more visible defects, Maroon for lighter swirl.

Are Buff and Shine pads suitable for dual action polishers?

Yes, the vast majority of the range is designed with dual action use in mind, which is how most detailers and enthusiasts polish today. The heavier wool and coarse foam pads work on rotary too, but you don't need a rotary to get proper results from this range.

How many pads should I own?

Two or three per grade minimum for a full car. Pads load up with spent compound and stop cutting properly, so you want to swap to a fresh one partway through rather than push on with a tired pad. Running short is the most common reason a correction takes longer than it should.

Which pad should I use on soft paint?

Start gentler than you think you need to. Soft paints, common on a lot of older European cars and some Asian manufacturers, mark up quickly under an aggressive pad. Uro-Tec Maroon or even Yellow with a light compound is a safer starting point than reaching straight for Coarse Blue or wool.

Which pad should I use on ceramic-hardened clear coat?

Paint that's already wearing a hard ceramic coating needs more bite to cut through, so Uro-Fiber Blueberry or Uro-Tec Coarse Blue paired with a dedicated coating-safe compound is the usual approach. Test a small area first, as cutting through an existing coating takes more patience than fresh paint.

Foam vs microfibre vs wool, which should I use?

Foam is the most forgiving and the best starting point for most people, easier to control and more predictable on curved panels. Microfibre cuts faster than foam for the same effort, which makes it excellent on hard clear coats and for getting through defects quickly on a dual action, but it finishes down less predictably. Wool cuts hardest of all and runs coolest, which is why it's still the answer when paint is genuinely damaged. Plenty of people cut with microfibre or wool and refine with foam, which is a good way to work.

Can Buff and Shine pads be machine washed?

You can machine wash them on a gentle, cold cycle with a dedicated pad bag and no detergent other than a proper pad cleaner, but hand washing gives you more control and is gentler on the backing and hook and loop. Either way, always air dry — never a machine dryer.

How long do polishing pads last?

With consistent cleaning during use and proper washing after every job, most foam pads are good for 15 to 30 full panels before they're noticeably past their best, with microfibre and wool sitting a little lower due to fibre compaction. Poor pad care shortens that considerably.

Do Buff and Shine pads fit my polisher?
