FAD explained, and why it matters

Compressor air output is quoted two different ways, and the difference catches a lot of buyers out.

Pump displacement is the volume the pump sweeps on every rotation. It is a theoretical figure and it is always the larger of the two, which is why it often appears first in marketing.

Free Air Delivery (FAD) is the air that actually reaches your tool once losses through the valves, rings and heat are accounted for. This is the number that determines whether your equipment will run properly.

We list FAD as the headline figure on every Puma page. If you are comparing this against another compressor and that one only quotes displacement, you are not comparing like with like. Always ask for the FAD figure.

Installation and ordering

  • Runs from a standard 10A outlet. No dedicated circuit installation is normally required, though the circuit should not be shared with other heavy loads.
  • Position on a level surface with clear airflow around the pump and motor.
  • Allow access underneath for the tank drain valve. Drain accumulated condensate regularly; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
  • A 5 micron filter regulator is fitted as standard, so no basic filter purchase is needed. For paint, coating or PPF work, add a suitable coalescing filter downstream to reduce oil aerosol.
  • Check the oil level before first use.

Choosing the right Puma

Step down if your use is occasional. The P14-60L costs less and suits lighter workloads.
Step up if you have or can install a 15 amp outlet. The P22-100L delivers 350 L/min on the same 100 litre tank, or the P18-100L gives 1,000 kPa (145 psi) at 320 L/min if you need the higher pressure.
Stay here if you are limited to 10 amp and want the most capable option available on that supply.

Maintenance

Glenco publish a full maintenance schedule for oil-lubricated compressors. Keeping to it is what determines how many years you get out of the pump.

Daily Check the oil level and inspect for oil leaks. Drain accumulated condensate from the tank; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
Weekly Check or clean the air filter, test the safety valve, inspect for air leaks.

240 L/min free air delivery (8.5 cfm) at up to 800 kPa (115 psi). Pump displacement is 300 L/min, but FAD is the figure that matters.

What does FAD mean?

Free Air Delivery, the air that actually reaches your tool once internal losses are accounted for. Pump displacement is the theoretical swept volume and is always higher. Compare FAD against FAD.

What tools can it run?

Blow guns, tyre inflation, detailing blow-out tools and interior cleaning guns comfortably. Pneumatic polishers are workable for one operator. Check sanders against the 240 L/min figure first.

How many tools can operate simultaneously?

Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered, nor is normal wear and tear. Keep your tax invoice as proof of purchase.
