FAD explained, and why it matters

Compressor air output is quoted two different ways, and the difference catches a lot of buyers out.

Pump displacement is the volume the pump sweeps on every rotation. It is a theoretical figure and it is always the larger of the two, which is why it often appears first in marketing.

Free Air Delivery (FAD) is the air that actually reaches your tool once losses through the valves, rings and heat are accounted for. This is the number that determines whether your equipment will run properly.

We list FAD as the headline figure on every Puma page. If you are comparing this against another compressor and that one only quotes displacement, you are not comparing like with like. Always ask for the FAD figure.

Installation and ordering

  • Requires a 415V three-phase supply. A single-phase workshop cannot run this compressor under any circumstances.
  • Installation and connection must be carried out by a licensed electrician.
  • Confirm your switchboard has spare capacity and the correct breaker rating available before ordering.
  • This is a fixed installation, not a portable unit. Decide on its position before delivery.
  • Ships on a pallet. You will need suitable access and a means of unloading, such as a forklift or pallet jack on a level surface.
  • Allow clear space around the unit for airflow, servicing and access to the tank drain.
  • Fit filtration between the compressor and your air line. For paint, coating or PPF work, include a suitable coalescing filter to reduce oil aerosol.
  • Confirm your switchboard can support a 25 amp three-phase circuit. This is a substantial electrical load.

Choosing the right Puma

Step down if you have two or three operators rather than a full workshop. The P30 415V delivers 520 L/min and costs considerably less.
Step down to single phase if you do not have three-phase available. The P22-120L is the most capable single-phase option at 350 L/min.

Maintenance

Glenco publish a full maintenance schedule for oil-lubricated compressors. Keeping to it is what determines how many years you get out of the pump.

Daily Check the oil level and inspect for oil leaks. Drain accumulated condensate from the tank; daily draining is recommended where the compressor is used frequently.
Weekly Check or clean the air filter, test the safety valve, inspect for air leaks.
Monthly Check the V-belt, tighten fasteners, clean the unit.
3 months or 500 hours Replace the oil.
12 months or 2,000 hours Replace the air filter.
2 years or 4,000 hours Replace the filter-regulator and V-belt.

Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered by warranty. Service intervals should be shortened in harsher working conditions.

Free air delivery is the figure to size your tools against. Higher pressure and higher flow are a trade-off at each amp rating, so pick based on what your tools actually require.

Common questions

How much air does it deliver?

1,055 L/min free air delivery (37.3 cfm). Pump displacement is 1,415 L/min (50.0 cfm), but FAD is the usable figure.

What does FAD mean?

Free Air Delivery. It is the air actually reaching your tools after internal losses, as opposed to pump displacement which is theoretical. On this model the gap is 360 L/min, which shows why the distinction matters.

What tools can it run?

Anything used in a commercial detailing or automotive workshop, including multiple pneumatic sanders and polishers running at once. Check any equipment requiring more than 800 kPa (116 psi).

How many tools can operate simultaneously?

We do not publish a fixed number because it depends on the specific tools, their duty cycle and your pipework. Send us your equipment list and workshop layout and we will size the whole system.

What power supply is required?

415V three phase, 16.1 amps running with a 25 amp circuit breaker. A licensed electrician must carry out the connection and your switchboard needs spare capacity.

Why is the maximum pressure lower than the smaller models?

This model is rated to 800 kPa (116 psi) rather than the 1,000 kPa (145 psi) of the 240V range. Detailing tools typically run at 600 to 800 kPa, so it remains well within requirements, but check any high-pressure equipment such as truck tyre inflation.

Is it suitable for detailing?

Yes, for high-volume operations. Pair it with proper filtration, as this is an oil-lubricated compressor and oil carryover will contaminate paintwork, ceramic coatings and PPF.

Does it need professional installation?

Yes. Three-phase connection must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and the unit needs positioning before delivery given its size.

What warranty comes with it?

Glenco Air & Power provide a 12 month warranty against defects in material and workmanship from the date of original sale. Electric motors carry whatever warranty the motor manufacturer provides. Consumables including filters, lubricants and V-belts are not covered, nor is normal wear and tear. Keep your tax invoice as proof of purchase.
