The Complete Guide to Car Detailing Microfibre Towels

How to choose microfibre towels for detailing. What GSM actually tells you, why pile length and weave matter just as much, which towel belongs on which job, and how many you genuinely need. Written by the team at Detailing Shed.

What Makes a Good Detailing Microfibre Towel?

Microfibre is a blend of polyester and polyamide, split into fibres many times finer than a human hair. Those split fibres create an enormous amount of surface area and a slight static charge, which is why a good microfibre towel lifts dirt off a surface and holds it rather than pushing it around the way cotton does.

That matters for one reason above all others. On a car, most swirl marks are not caused by the chemical you used. They are caused by grit being dragged across clear coat by whatever you were holding. The towel is the thing touching your paint, so it deserves more thought than it usually gets.

Five things determine whether a towel suits a job:

  • Density (GSM) is how much fibre is packed into the towel.
  • Pile length is how far the fibres stand off the backing.
  • Weave is how those fibres are constructed, such as dual pile, coral fleece or suede.
  • Blend is the polyester to polyamide ratio, usually 80/20 or 70/30.
  • Edge is whether the towel has a stitched border or is edgeless.

People fixate on the first and ignore the other four. That is the single biggest reason customers end up with towels that disappoint them.

GSM Explained

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much fibre is packed into a given area. A 300 GSM towel is thin and light. A 500 GSM towel is noticeably plusher and heavier.

Higher GSM does not automatically mean a better towel. It means a different towel. GSM tells you density and nothing else. It says nothing about pile length, weave, blend quality or edge construction, and any one of those can matter more depending on the job. A 300 GSM waffle weave will outperform a 500 GSM plush towel on glass every time. Buy for the job, not for the number.

GSM ranges for paint, glass and general work

These are guidelines rather than rules, and construction quality varies between manufacturers. A well-made 350 GSM towel can outperform a poorly made 500. Drying towels run far heavier than anything in this table, typically 600 GSM and up, and are covered separately in the Car Drying Towels Guide.

Pile Length Explained

Pile length is how far the fibres stand off the backing of the towel. It is often more useful than GSM for predicting how a towel will behave, and it is almost never printed on the label.

Short pile

Fibres sit close to the backing, giving a flatter surface with good bite. Better for removing residue cleanly, working on glass, and levelling coatings where you want feedback through the towel.

Medium pile

The general-purpose middle ground. Enough softness for paint, enough structure to lift residue. Most everyday detailing towels sit here.

Long or plush pile

Fibres stand well off the backing, so grit picked up is carried away from the paint rather than dragged along it. Softest and safest on dark paint, but less precise for residue removal.

Short-pile versus plush: which should you use?

The honest answer is both, for different things.

Use plush when your priority is not marring the paint. Final buffing, wax and sealant removal, quick detailer wipe-downs on a clean car, and anything on black or dark metallic that shows every mark.

Use short pile when your priority is control and clean removal. Glass, levelling ceramic coatings, lifting stubborn polish residue out of panel gaps, and any job where a plush towel would smear product around instead of removing it.

A dual pile towel gives you both in one, plush on one face and a shorter nap on the other. It is a genuinely useful format if you want to carry fewer towels.

Weave Types

Two towels can share an identical GSM and behave nothing alike, because the weave determines how the fibres pick things up and release them.

What 70/30 and 80/20 mean. These are polyester to polyamide ratios. Polyester provides structure and cleaning bite. Polyamide provides softness and absorbency, and costs more. A 70/30 blend contains more polyamide than the more common 80/20, which is why premium plush towels are usually 70/30 and why they feel noticeably different in the hand.

Edgeless Towels

A traditional microfibre towel has a stitched polyester border. That border is harder than the microfibre it is attached to, and under pressure it is the part most likely to catch and drag across clear coat.

On silver or white paint you may never notice. On black, navy or a dark metallic, a border catching a panel leaves a visible mark you then have to polish out.

Edgeless towels solve this by laser-cutting or ultrasonically sealing the edge instead of stitching one on. For anything touching paint, particularly after polishing and particularly on dark colours, edgeless is the safer choice.

For wheels, arches, door shuts and engine bays it makes no practical difference, so buy bordered towels there and save the money.

The Main Towel Types

Polishing and buffing towels

After machine polishing you are removing an oily residue from paint that has just been abraded and is at its most vulnerable. This is where edgeless matters most. Look for 380 to 500 GSM, edgeless, with a medium to plush pile.

Use a folded towel and flip to a clean face regularly. A saturated towel stops absorbing residue and starts smearing it back onto the panel.

Ceramic coating towels and applicators

Coatings need two separate items, and this trips up a lot of first-time users.

To apply, use a suede or no-soak applicator. Suede has no nap, so the coating sits on the surface and transfers to the paint instead of soaking into the applicator. Given what coatings cost per millilitre, this matters more than it sounds.

To level, use a dedicated coating towel. These are short pile and edgeless, so they remove high spots cleanly without grabbing at a coating that has started to flash. An ordinary plush towel will snag and streak.

Waffle-weave glass towels

The flat grid structure of a waffle weave grips cleaner residue without shedding lint, which is exactly what glass needs. Low-pile flat weave glass towels work on the same principle.

Use two towels on glass. One to apply cleaner and break down the film, a second clean dry one to buff off. Trying to do both with one towel is the most common cause of streaking, and it has nothing to do with which cleaner you bought.

Quick-detailer towels

Quick detailer work happens on a car that is already clean, so the risk is lower, but you are still touching paint. A soft edgeless towel in the 350 to 500 GSM range is ideal. Buy several, because this is the towel you reach for most often.

Wax and sealant towels

Removing a cured wax or sealant needs a towel with enough bite to lift the residue but enough softness not to mar. Coral fleece and plush edgeless towels both work well here. The mistake is using something too thin, which just moves the residue around and leaves streaking on dark paint.

General-purpose towels

Every detailer needs a stack of cheap mid-weight towels for the jobs that are not precious. Door shuts, exhaust tips, wheel faces, tools, spills and general workshop wiping. Buy these in multi-packs and treat them as consumables rather than trying to preserve them.

Drying towels

Drying is the one job where the rules in this guide change completely. Drying towels run from roughly 600 GSM to well past 1500, use twisted loop or hybrid weaves built purely to hold water, and are chosen by size and vehicle rather than by pile or edge.

How Many Towels Do You Actually Need?

More than you think, and this is where most people under-buy. A single full detail on one car can comfortably use eight to twelve towels once you separate the jobs properly.

Maintenance wash

One drying towel, two general-purpose, one glass towel. Four minimum.

Full detail

One or two drying, three to four plush for polish and wax removal, two glass, two or three dirty-jobs. Eight to twelve.

Coating job

Add two or three coating towels and a suede applicator on top of a full detail set.

Mobile or professional

Enough clean towels for a full day without washing between cars. Most pros carry thirty or more.

The practical reason to over-buy is simple. When you run short, you start reusing a dirty towel on clean paint, and that is precisely how swirl marks happen. Towels are inexpensive compared with paint correction, so a multi-pack is cheap insurance.

Colour Coding Your Towels

This is the single easiest habit that will protect your paint, and it costs nothing.

Assign a colour to each zone and never cross them over. A common system:

  • Plush light colour for paint, polish and wax removal
  • Blue or green for glass
  • Black or grey for wheels, arches and exhaust tips
  • Another distinct colour for interior
  • Anything faded or retired for engine bays and spills

The reason is not tidiness. Brake dust contains hard metallic particles that embed in microfibre and do not fully wash out. A towel that has been on a wheel and then goes on a bonnet is carrying abrasive material directly onto your clear coat. Colour coding makes that mistake impossible to make by accident, even at the end of a long job when you are not thinking carefully.

Washing and Caring for Microfibre

Microfibre rarely wears out from use. It gets ruined in the wash. The short version:

  • Never use fabric softener. It coats the fibres in a waxy film and permanently destroys absorbency.
  • Wash microfibre separately from cotton. Cotton sheds lint that embeds in microfibre and never comes out.
  • Use a dedicated microfibre wash rather than household laundry detergent.
  • Low heat or line dry. Microfibre is a plastic, and high heat melts the fibre tips.
  • Wash zones separately. Wheel towels never go in with paint towels.

Common Microfibre Mistakes

Using one towel for everything

The most damaging habit there is. Wheel grit ends up on paint. Separate by zone and colour code.

Buying on GSM alone

A high number on the label does not make a towel right for your job. Weave, pile and edge matter just as much.

Fabric softener

Permanently kills absorbency. If a towel suddenly pushes water around instead of soaking it up, this is almost always why.

Continuing with a dropped towel

A towel that hits the ground has picked up grit that will not wash out in one cycle. Set it aside for dirty work immediately.

Working a saturated towel

Once loaded with product a towel stops absorbing and starts smearing. Fold into quarters and flip to a fresh face regularly.

Bordered towels on dark paint

The stitched edge is harder than the microfibre and can mark clear coat. Use edgeless on anything that shows marks.

Hot tumble drying

Melts the fibre tips. That scratchy feeling on an old towel is heat damage, and it is not reversible.

Not owning enough towels

Running short mid-job forces you to reuse dirty towels on clean paint. Buy multi-packs.

When to Retire a Towel

Microfibre does not last forever, but it does have a second life. Rather than throwing towels out, demote them.

  • Retire from paint when the plush has flattened, the towel feels rough against the back of your hand, or it has been dropped and you are not confident it is clean.
  • Retire from glass when it starts leaving lint or streaking no matter how carefully you work.
  • Bin entirely when the fibres feel hard and plasticky, it no longer absorbs after a proper wash, or the edge has frayed into something that could catch.

A towel demoted from paint has years of useful life left on wheels, door shuts and engine bays. Mark it clearly or move it to your dirty-jobs colour so it never migrates back.

The test we use: hold the towel against the back of your hand. If it feels soft and grabs slightly at the skin, it is still fine for paint. If it feels slick or scratchy, the fibres are damaged and it belongs somewhere else.
